Tumbled Amethyst A type of quartz, amethyst receives its distinct violet to dark purple colorization from the presence of manganese oxide impurities. Many of these crystals are from sections of hollow geode cavities formed within casts of petrified logs in Brazil. Deposits of amethyst are also known from Ontario, Canada and central Mexico.
